STRONGER AFTER 55+: Celebrating Independence by Investing In Your Own

As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America, we look to almost 250+ years of medical advancements, misconceptions, and setbacks – shaping the way medicine has evolved through the history of our nation and in the world beyond. From Alexander Fleming's groundbreaking invention of penicillin sparking the rise of antibody treatments, to the technological advancement of next-generation sequencing and  human genomics that provide the foundation of precision medicine we see today, healthcare in America and around the world is shifting to a rather newer concept of revolution – Preventative Health. A field widely misconceptualized and overlooked historically, the health, wellness, and longevity economy has nearly doubled since 2013, bringing the market to $6.8 Trillion as of 2024 (The Global Wellness Institute). Preventative health has the power to enable us to not only live beyond the average lifespan, but conquer it with strength, dignity, and independence. Building and retaining our personal independence is what we celebrate today.

When we picture a traditional July 4th celebration, we think of the laughter, loved ones, and delicious barbequed burgers, sitting in our backyard. We find ourselves cherishing the moments we have with our family and friends, celebrating without asking the real question: How can we make more memories with them? That starts with taking care of your health – not the intensive dieting kind, or the extreme pilates programs we see online. But ones that build us through consistency, not extremity.

Many of us enjoy a good barbeque cookout, but how can we make sure our health stays in check too? Nutritional balance becomes key – pairing burger patties with complementary greens and veggies, or incorporating fun fruit platters into our diet. Creating a balance between the carbohydrates, protein, and vitamin-rich foods becomes one of the primary ways consistency plays an effect in building longevity through minimal, viable everyday actions. Balance in our nutrition becomes crucial in balancing pH, gut microbiome, and metabolic health – overall factors impacting the prevention of common aging-related conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol levels, and energy dysfunction. Maintaining it everyday in small ways helps build us into the stronger, better versions of ourselves as we age.

Alongside protein incorporations, weight training remains a heavily underlooked area of exercise amongst adults 55+. Weight training doesn’t need to be the intense workout it's misconceived to be. Whether it be exercising muscles through small 5-pound weights, or carrying a carton of milk around the house, small ways in which we can slowly but surely build muscle strength throughout time. Strengthening our muscles becomes a key factor contributing towards our personal autonomy and independence as we age. Building muscle equates to the significantly reduced risk of falls, fragility, and breaking bones – helping us bounce back better and limit the preventable pain we could face in the future. Here’s how we can do this:

MINIMUM VIABLE ACTION:

Fresh & Festive July 4th Shareable

Red, White, & Blue Salad Skewers

A fun way to incorporate fruits and vegetables into your July 4th cookout plans are quite simple and decorative! Grab any red fruit or veggie of your choice (Strawberries, Raspberries, and Red Cherry Tomatoes are our classic favorites!), as well as some blueberries, serving a balance of great antioxidant purposes. Feta cheese works well, but you can choose any kind of choice! The final step is assembling mini toothpick skewers that are sure to be an effortlessly healthy, festive, and balanced snackable food for your July 4th Gathering!

Another common factor affecting the aging crisis becomes prominent through the increasing amount of social isolation faced by adults 55+. According to the Institute of Healthcare Policy and Innovation, nearly one-quarter of all adults 65+ struggle with social isolation. As we near the celebration of our independence, let us find ways to celebrate it with those we love most – our loved ones and our community. Whether it be inviting neighbors over for a small social gathering, or creating memories with family members, combatting isolation becomes a primary factor in preventing the onset of mental health conditions, and certain neurological conditions, that we are most prone to as we age. Surrounded by the people we love, we learn to build strength within our minds and bodies – to help us age into independence with dignity and grace.

Independence becomes necessary to our health and wellbeing as we age. Having the ability to perform our daily tasks with comfort and ease is something many of us don’t think about as we age – but one that should be fundamental for your journey to longevity. Here at Primespan, we support adults 55+ in building their independence by aging with strength – our personalized coaching programs and modules here to help support you through small, strong, and consistent actions every step of the way.
